Nicholas Mayhew has been the president and Chief Executive Officer of GPO Federal Credit Union since 2014 and served on the board of directors for more than 20 years. Under Nick’s direction, GPO has expanded into new markets – including opening a branch in Barneveld and increasing ways in which Mohawk Valley residents can become credit union members. During his time at the helm, GPO has seen strong growth in shares, assets and membership. Nick is also active in the credit union industry. He maintains a seat on the board of directors of Owner’s Choice – a mortgage lender for credit union members only.
Giving back to the local community is a priority for Nick. He is a board member of the Mohawk Valley EDGE, the American Heart Association, the Whitestown Youth Association, and the Rome Memorial Hospital Foundation. When the American Cancer Society approached him about joining the Real Men Wear Pink fundraising platform, it was an easy decision. Not only does Nick want to help those in the community who are affected by breast cancer, he is fundraising to honor his parents who both passed away from cancer. He is thankful for this opportunity to give back.
Joe Helmer has been a manager at GPO for over three years and serves the downtown Utica area. He provides service to his members as their trusted advisor of financial needs while supporting his staff through their daily responsibilities and coaching them to achieve future career goals. Joe participates in Utica’s Greatest Heart Run and Walk every year in support of the American Heart Association and is also the board member treasurer for the Loyal Order of the Moose in Ilion.
Like far too many people, Joe has loved ones who have been affected by cancer so he has joined GPO’s Real Men Wear Pink team to raise awareness of breast cancer’s clutches and help save lives. Joe also raises money for the American Cancer Society every year by participating in No Shave November with other GPO employees.
Jeff Rowlands is the manager of GPO Federal Credit Union’s Oneida branch. As a branch manager, Jeff coaches his staff to succeed and ensures that the members in his community receive the best, GPO-friendly service possible. Jeff is active in the Oneida community and known by many. He served for many years on the Oneida Chamber of Commerce Board and was on the YMCA board for 10 years; two of which he served as the president.
Supporting the American Cancer Society is near and dear to Jeff’s heart because his wife is a proud seven-year survivor of breast cancer. She and Jeff received a lot of support from organizations like the American Cancer Society, so Jeff is more than happy to help fundraise through Making Strides as a way to thank The Society for all the help they gave his family and to ensure they can continue to help those in need who are battling cancer.
Ibrahim Kajtezovic has been a member of the GPO team for nine years and is the branch manager of GPO’s newest branch in Barneveld. As the manager, Ib creates financial relationships with the members of the community and helps them realize their financial dreams. Not only does Ib provide patrons with financial services, he volunteers as a firefighter with the Holland Patent Hose Company and is currently serving as the vice president. Ib is also a passionate supporter of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Having had both parents pass away from different forms of cancer, Ib wants to help the American Cancer Society in any way possible and has chosen to join GPO’s Real Men Wear Pink team as a way to do that. He also joins his colleagues in GPO’s No Shave November campaign every year to raise awareness and money for the American Cancer Society.
As a member service representative in GPO Federal Credit Union’s Ilion branch, Matt assists members in many ways in order to provide them with a better banking experience. He builds relationships with the businesses of Ilion by showing their employees the benefits of an account at GPO and how GPO can help them stretch their paychecks. Matt has participated in Making Strides several times as well as Utica’s Great Heart Run and Walk.
Making Strides is an important organization to Matt because he has lost several family members to cancer and his mother to breast cancer. His effort and commitment to raising money with other Real Men Wear Pink participants will honor his mother and help those still battling. As an extra way to help cancer victims and encourage GPO members to contribute to Making Strides, Matt will be donating his hair in the fall to Pantene Beautiful Lengths.
Saphar Art is a member service representative at GPO Federal Credit Union. Saphar travels to different branches and helps members understand the products and services GPO provides that can help them achieve their financial goals. Saphar is also a part of a small organization in Utica called UMMY and volunteers at the Refugee Center helping those who wish to become US citizens. Many individuals cannot travel to the Refugee Center due to disabilities, so Saphar travels to their homes to translate for them and help them study for the naturalization exam.
Like many others, Saphar has seen firsthand how breast cancer can affect not only those diagnosed with cancer but the families that work so hard to support them. He knows that programs like the American Cancer Society are necessary to provide those families with the resources and help they need to take care of their loved ones. He is very thankful for the opportunity to get involved and is proud to join GPO’s fundraising to make a difference.
